Land and Buildings Transaction Tax applies to purchases of residential and commercial property and land situated in Scotland. It operates independently of the equivalent taxes in the rest of the UK, with its own bands, rates and reliefs set by Revenue Scotland, so figures applicable elsewhere in the UK cannot simply be carried across.

Reliefs are available for certain buyers and transaction types, including first-time buyers and some multiple property purchases. Anyone buying or transferring property in Scotland, including as an investment, should confirm how the tax applies to their specific transaction, since the treatment can differ from what is expected under the equivalent English or Welsh rules.
