Stamp Duty Land Tax is charged on the purchase of residential and commercial property and land in England and Northern Ireland, and is normally payable by the buyer within a set period after completion. The amount due depends on the price paid, the type of property, and the buyer's individual circumstances.

Additional charges can apply to purchases of second homes, buy-to-let property, or purchases by companies, while reliefs exist for some first-time buyers and other specific situations. Because rates, bands and reliefs are reviewed at fiscal events, it is important to check the position that applies at the time of your purchase.
